Welcome to Te Whānau Puha
Te Whānau Puha is our database of killer whales in Antarctic and New Zealand waters.
Te Whānau Puha in the Maori language, Te Reo, refers to 'the family of animals that expel air'. We chose a Maori name for our database to pay respect to the indigenous people of New Zealand, the land in which we are located.
The database is primarily focused on killer whales in Antarctica, specifically in the Ross Sea region, including images collected as part of the Top Predator Alliance (TPA), Heritage Expeditions, and external submissions. The images are used to produce a catalogue of individual killer whales and monitor the population between years. More information about killer whales, photo-identification, and our research can be found on our page.
